Savannah: A Southern Urban Anomaly

Broughton Street

Broughton Street is the mixed-use epicenter of Savannah’s urban core and a true successful revitalization story. Prior to the rise of suburbia, shopping malls and the automobile’s popularity, Broughton Street was Savannah’s retail main street. Broughton’s fortunes began to turn around in the 1990s and it’s now the location of one of the city’s most ambitious redevelopment projects. Ben Carter Enterprises’ Broughton Street Collection, a mixed-use redevelopment project encompassing retail, restaurant, residential and office uses, is the result of accumulating and restoring 37 historic properties along the traditional retail main street of the city’s urban core.
