Food halls have enjoyed a popular resurgence in popular food culture. While places like Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market, Seattle's Pikes Place Market and San Francisco's Ferry Building have long been the flag bearers for US food halls, new players are redefining the category. Here is a look at new food halls that you may not have heard about, but need to visit immediately.

Located an hour north of San Francisco in the heart of Sonoma County’s wine country, The Barlow is a stunning food hall and marketplace commons, that can be best described as an artisanal neighborhood.

Spread over 12.5 acres, the complex is home to 38 retail shops, restaurants, food purveyors, winemakers, distillers and brewers. These artisans are housed in a mix of stunning, repurposed buildings (the site was formerly home to an apple processing plant) as well as newly constructed steel barns that echo the architectural style of the former Barlow Company cannery.

Reminiscent of Washington, DC’s Eastern Market, The Barlow functions as a retail and dining destination as well as a working production facility where visitors can watch and learn about local products being made on site from more than three dozen artisans.

Throughout the grounds, visitors can lounge among an ample amount of greenspace comprised of all organic, edible landscaping. Additional features include Bocce ball courts, a lavender garden, fire pits and ample patio dining space.
