A fight for survival: Charleston's Citadel Mall

Regional enclosed shopping centers across the country are in decline. Charleston's Citadel Mall is one that ownership has continuously attempted to revamp to respond to changing retail demographics and trends.

The mall’s closed Sears store has since been leased to HBO for the filming of its comedy television series “The Righteous Gemstones.”

This two-story Dillard’s department store was added to the shopping center in 1994.

An original department store anchor when the mall opened in 1981, Belk moved to this larger, two-story space in 2000. Belk’s smaller, older building was then sold to Parisian.

The Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16, opened in the mall’s parking lot in 2009.

Target has operated a store at Citadel Mall since 2001.
