Charles “Chuck” Marohn, the founder and president of Strong Towns, will be giving his Confessions of a Recovering Engineer presentation, where he will lift the curtain on America’s transportation system in his newest book of the same name.

Strong Towns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit media advocacy organization that produces content analyzing the failures of the post-war North American development pattern while giving citizens the knowledge and tools to start making our places better today. Strong Towns desires to replace America’s post-war pattern of development, the Suburban Experiment, with a pattern of development that is financially strong and resilient, while advocating for cities of all sizes to be safe, livable, and inviting.

In this book tour presentation, Marohn demonstrates how the values of engineers and other transportation professionals are applied in the design process, and how those priorities differ from the values of the general public. By showing how transportation investments are a means to an end and not an end unto themselves, Marohn reveals how the standard approach to issues like fighting congestion, addressing speeding, and designing intersections only makes transportation problems worse, at great cost in terms of both safety and resources. By contrast, the Strong Towns approach to transportation focuses on bottom-up techniques for spending less and getting higher returns, all while improving quality of life for residents of a community.

Sponsored by APA Florida’s First Coast Section, the Strong Towns event will be held at the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, located at 980 North Jefferson Street, in LaVilla. Following the presentation, Marohn will lead a walking tour of LaVilla with a focus on the Strong Towns approach to transportation.
