Discovering the Atlanta you probably didn't know

Atlanta is known for a lot of things but being a historically pedestrian scale city is not one of them. However, an explosion in growth since 1950, that has lead to the metropolis sprawling across much of Georgia, can give off a quite deceiving impression.

Five Points

Referring to the convergence of Peachtree Street, Decatur Street, Marietta Street and Edgewood Avenue, Five Points originated as the intersection of two 19th century Creek Indian trails. It was here, at the zero milepost of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, where the City of Terminus was established in 1837. On December 29, 1847, the fledgling community was incorporated as Atlanta.

Up until the 1960s, Five Points was the central commercial hub of Atlanta. In recent years, many of its buildings have been renovated to accommodate the expanding needs of Georgia State University. Once the location of Atlanta’s major railroad terminals, major Five Points destinations today include Woodruff Park and the Atlanta Underground.
