January 15, 2017

Walk up to the fifty best mobile kitchens in the US. These food truckers stand out by serving excellent food, curbside.

Serving incredibly fresh takes on Thai food, DegThai is a great find in the Music City. On a recent trip to Nashville, I hopped on the bikeshare to find DegThai parked near Vanderbuilt (btw Nashville, your bike infrastructure sucks) and started smelling this truck nearly four blocks away. It was motivation to keep pedaling up a hill that seemed to last forever. Try the signature sandwich – Massaman slow cooked curry beef on Asian flat bread served with cucumber sauce.

Yes, San Francisco, Los Angeles and to a lesser extent San Diego get all the food truck attention in California. Don’t be snobby and think that the Capital City’s best food truck can’t roll with the best in the state. Melts are king on this truck. Try the Hemi- slow roasted Carolina pulled pork, mac n cheese, grilled onions and cheddar cheese grilled on sliced French bread. ‘Dank’ isn’t a word traditionally found in food reviews, but Drewski’s dankability measures off the charts.

Poke Roll

Hawaii’s Poke Roll serves a menu filled with poke bowls and wraps. You can’t go wrong with any of the poke rolls, but try Stone Grill Poke Bowl- choice of two proteins (get the poke and tako) served in a stone pot with a hot stock that simmers into a mixture of egg, cucumber and rice. It’s the perfect fusion of island grinds and in a Korean bim bap-type vessel.

Fuel Food Truck

Focusing on a philosophy of serving clean fuel for the body, Fuel Food Truck offers an all natural menu full of grass fed meats (along with plentiful vegan friendly options).  The truck is probably the least graphically interesting of the list, but that doesn’t matter much when you take a bite out of the bison tacos - ground bison served in locally made soft corn tortillas topped with cheese, lettuce, salsa, red onion, cilantro, and sour cream.

The Green Bowl

We have a soft spot for the do-gooders, so we tend to notice things like The Green Bowl’s mission statement of ‘striving to make a positive impact on both the community and your taste buds,’ This truck serves a mashup of Asian and Latin-inspired food in, you guessed it: bowls (that are also compostable). Try the signature Green Bowl- marinated bean sprouts, pickled carrots, sauteed zucchini, a fried egg and beef bulgogi served over organic spinach and mixed greens with a side of truck-made soy ginger vinaigrette. Don’t forget a side of tostones to dip into a Baltimore favorite- Old Bay sauce.
